It might seem strange to start a blog on the latest technology by quoting a 19th century author, but for this piece it seems perfectly apt…
“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of coloured glass that have been in use through all the ages.” Mark Twain.
It now appears that the clever people over at SMART Tech, best known for their range of interactive educational whiteboards, have been turning their own “mental kaleidoscope” with the result being the re-invention of what has been a meeting room staple for a good few years.
SMART KAPP is the dry-erase whiteboard reinvented, designed to revolutionise meeting room collaboration or business meetings by simply putting one anywhere you’d put a white board or flip chart. The SMART Kapp combines a sleek, modern version of a dry-erase board with a powerful app that lets you save and share content as it unfolds. Simply replace your flip chart with the 42” portrait model or your whiteboard with an 84” landscape version then plug it in and start the brainstorming.
The SMART KAPP application lets the meeting host connect their Android or iOS device to the board via an NFC tag or QR code and invite meeting participants to join the session, whether they be in the same room or anywhere else in the world, providing they have an internet connection. Users can download a free version of the SMART Kapp application, allowing for up to 5 people to share content in real time, or for a small fee the premium app allows up to 250 connections.
The content captured during the meeting can be saved as JPEG or PDF snapshots and can be uploaded directly to popular storage platforms such as Evernote, Google Drive or Dropbox for example. Alternatively files can be save directly to USB for distribution at a later time and for security any content you share can be immediately deleted when you disconnect from the board.
Having used the SMART Kapp it is the simplicity of the product that, in my opinion, makes this a great product, even for the least tech savvy of people. If you can write on a flip chart or whiteboard you can use the SMART Kapp. Having the ability to capture all notes, ideas, progressions in real time is great for meeting productivity. No more taking pictures of your work with your phone and trying to figure out where the final idea came from in the first place… no more ideas, that you have spent hours developing, being lost when the cleaner comes in at night and wipes the board!
The SMART Kapp will also not break your budget, the 42’ portrait version comes in at £599 with the larger 84” landscape version at £899*. On the back of the success of this product SMART have also recently launched the SMART Kapp IQ, a 4K interactive touch screen display in either 55” or 65”, with SMART Kapp technology built right in, offering even more collaboration features including two way communication.
I would expect the SMART Kapp range to feature quite a lot in the future, as people “re-invent” how they collaborate and share ideas in their business environment.
