New technologies are transforming entertainment, on and offshore, giving viewers more control and flexibility about what they watch and how they are entertained. Please see below an overview of the latest technological advances available to you and your crew.
IPTV
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol TV. In basic terms, this means television content that is distributed over the Internet and is a multi-channel, Internet protocol service which can facilitate the delivery of multi-definition content.
Rather than the signal being transmitted via satellite, cable or terrestrial routes, the IPTV signal is transmitted via a broadband line. Consumers are then able to view their chosen content in a variety of ways including on a PC, mobile telephone or a gaming console.
Offshore, IPTV is becoming increasingly available to crews for recreational time. IPTV technology can deliver a wide range of entertainment and information services to an unlimited number of TV screens, at any distance over a single data network cable. This is perfect for the offshore industry, allowing crews to tailor their entertainment options, including satellite TV and radio channels, terrestrial TV and radio channels, Video on Demand, company intranet, IP telephony, low bandwidth email, internet and cinema facilities, as well as CCTV access and emergency systems integration.
IPTV has the capacity for hundreds of channels and guarantees broadcast quality pictures consistently at every point.
IPTV can also cater for the recent move into streaming sport via the internet, allowing users to view sport, concerts and events on their IPTV screen. England football games and cricket from the Indian Premier League (IPL), have all been shown live online for the first time in recent months, with viewers asked to subscribe to the action.
AVC’s team of offshore technicians have the expertise and environment experience to install IPTV systems offshore.
VOD
Television is constantly moving further away from its traditional position of programming at set times, with technology having now made the move towards Video on Demand (VOD).
Video on Demand enables consumers to choose the movies they want via an on-screen menu, and control the sessions with VCR-like functions such as stop, fast-forward and rewind. This is unlike traditional pay-per-view, where the consumer has to watch the movie at a fixed time.
Perfect for the offshore market, VOD allows crews to watch specific programming when it suits them – ideal for those working shifts and unsociable hours.
