Media Response

Media Training: Overview

With over 10 years of Media Training experience, AVC’s aim is to provide delegates with the skills, knowledge and expertise required to respond to and manage major incidents that could potentially damage an organisation’s image.

Combining theory and practice, AVC’s unique media response training will completely prepare you and your team for events that attract media attention.

From the basic principles of presentation skills through to interviews in front of camera, AVC uses some of the best-known, experienced journalists and PR professionals to make your training experience as realistic as possible.

Media Training: The Benefits

There are many reasons to develop your employees’ media skills – making sure that your spokespeople feel confident and capable.

The press, radio and television present enormous opportunities to get your message across to the right audience. If you don't take advantage of them, your rivals will.

You may also have colleagues who have to deal with emergencies, unexpected crises, accidents or controversies and need to be well-prepared to ensure they aren't wrong-footed by the media or manoeuvred into saying something they shouldn't, or simply don't want to reveal.

There may also be a launch, large event, or a campaign coming up and you want to attract the media’s attention.

Media Training: Practical exercises

Using either all - or a selection - of the exercises listed below, the day will be tailored to specifically meet your needs.

  • Doorstep Interview
  • Radio/Telephone Interview
  • Remote Studio Interview
  • Press Conference

Feedback:

After each interview the delegates will be able to watch, listen and review their performances under the guidance of the course trainer.  Individual feedback is also provided in order to make each delegate aware of their strengths, weaknesses and areas requiring further improvement.

Each delegate will be provided with a course handbook and DVD containing all their interviews from throughout the day, which can then be reviewed and used to aid further development in the future.

Scenarios:

It is important that the scenario for the day is relevant to the client. Therefore each and every scenario is developed individually through a collaborative process between our trainer and the client.

AVC’s Media Trainer researches relevant incidents and dealings with the media, and will then devise a relevant scenario, ensuring the training is as realistic as possible. The scenario can be structured in one of two ways:

  • One evolving scenario can be played out over the course of the session, with information being released at different stages of the day
  • Alternatively, different scenarios can be used for the varying exercises throughout the day

Before each practical exercise, delegates are given time as a group to discuss the specific issues that the media may bring up and the message they want to get across.  Throughout each exercise, delegates will be asked to relate questions relevant to their area of responsibility.

Testimonials

Neil Wem, HSSE & Business Assurance Director, AMEC

“Thanks very much Kirstin, I found the whole day very useful – all the more so because your grilling made it more realistic. I don’t think I would have got as much out of the day if you’d given us a comfortable ride!”Over the last 12 months I have enrolled over 100 students to attend a 1 x day Supervisory/Leadership Skills course held at AVC. The decision to use an outside “trainer/facility” was to ensure they recognised that Supervisory/Leadership skills were not just confined to our particular industry, but are an integral ingredient if one wishes to achieve a competent and contented work force.
