In June, Robert Gordon University and AVC Business Centre announced a new series of Masters level taster courses in key strategic management subjects for the continuing professional development.

These ‘Management Master Classes’ are targeted at those in management positions or progressing to this level, with a first degree and might be considering taking the next step to further their development at postgraduate level.

The courses support career development by giving an insight into important management subjects like project management, budgeting, economics, leadership and change, business strategy and marketing communications. The subjects are relevant to your industry sector and will allow you to gauge your abilities for this level of study.

The courses, delivered by RGU academics and industry professionals, give a comprehensive strategic level introduction to the subject, provide efficient and effective models, theories, case studies and tool kits, and equip you/your team with the level of theory, practical knowledge and skills required to be more effective in your role.

The first of these courses, Project Management within the Communications Industry, took place in August 2009. The aim of the seminar was to establish what is meant by strategic project management, evaluate a range of theoretical approaches to strategic project management within the communications industry and apply the concepts and principles of strategic project management to a variety of case studies relevant to the delegates industry.

The course was mainly lecture based with workshop activities integrated into the day to allow delegates to test their current knowledge and discover areas for future development. Delivered by both RGU lecturers and experienced industry professionals, the course also gave delegates the option to submit a piece of coursework which would be marked and feedback given. This assessment was designed to give delegates a clear indication of their ability to work to a Masters level.

The first course was a great success, receiving positive feedback and suggestions for moving forward. One delegate said “the course gave me a brilliant overview of Project Management and the importance of this within the Communications Industry. The mix of both academia and industry made it seem more relevant to me in my working day”.

The next Master Class in due to take place in December and will focus fully on Project Management.
